Arkansas Begins Indoor Track Season Ranked No.

    FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Arkansas begins its 2000 indoor track campaign ranked No. 1 in the nation according to Trackwire online, Wednesday morning.
The Hogs have won 16 of the last 17 NCAA Indoor Championships and are working on their third-consecutive title.
    "We are going to have to have some of the young people step up this year," head coach John McDonnell said. "We lost four outstanding athletes from last year's team. I think that we have some people that can step up, only time will tell."
    The 2000 Razorbacks return 13 All-Americans and two national champions in Melvin Lister and Kenny Evans.
    "It is a point of confidence," throws and jumps coach Dick Booth said. "When you can come back as a national champion, you look forward to going into the next season."
    Lister, a Lavenworth, Kan. native, is a two-time national champion having won titles in the 1999 indoor triple jump (55-0 3/4) and the 1999 outdoor long jump (26-10 1/2). The three-time All-American tops the list of people to watch in track and field according to Trackwire.
    Evans, a Pine Bluff, Ark. native, claimed the 1998 high jump national championship by jumping a height of 7'-6", roughly the height of a door frame. In 1999, he had a runner up finish at the NCAA Indoor meet and a third place finish at the NCAA outdoor meet.
    "In the field events, where we really didn't have the depth, we have good depth this year," McDonnell said. "We have some studs there."
    The Hogs will begin the 2000 season Jan. 21 when they will host two teams in the SEC Quadrangular. The event will host Ole Miss and LSU.
