FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - After staying in the second-place spot since the beginning of the indoor season four weeks ago, the Razorback track and field team was able to grab the number-one ranking in this week's Trackwire Top 25 poll.
"It's a nice honor to be number one," Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. "We'll have to compete a lot better to keep that ranking, but we have a team that can do it. We have the people in place and this weekend at the Tyson Invitational will be a good chance to show that."
For the past month Arkansas had been closing the gap with formerly ranked number one, LSU, but after the Tigers struggled at Florida's Gator Invitational and the Hogs earned three new qualifiers at the Adidas Classic in Lincoln, Neb., Arkansas claimed the top spot with 49 points. South Carolina is right behind in second with 46 points, followed by LSU in third with 44.
Mississippi State is in fourth place with 29 points. Auburn tallied 27 points to put themselves in sixth and Florida (18) rounded out the top 10 tied with Ohio State.
The Trackwire poll is a power ranking of NCAA Division I track and field teams. This ranking's methodology takes into account a variety of statistical predictors and is intended to project the outcome of the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships to be held in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 14-15.
