Bridges Two-Run Home Run in the Seventh Lifts

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Razorbacks' nine-hole hitter Scott Bridges played the role of hero in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Texas-Arlington with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning that gave 25th-ranked Arkansas a 2-1 lead.
The home run would be all the Hogs would need in a 2-1 win to improve to 3-0 on the season. Texas-Arlington fell to 2-3 with the loss.
Sophomore James Gilbert made his first career start on Sunday and turned in a solid performance. He allowed only one unearned run and scattered four hits over four innings of work.
But the story of the day might have been Daryl Maday's performance out of the Razorbacks' bullpen. The right-handed sophomore came on in the fifth inning and tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win. Maday retired all 15 batters he faced while striking out seven.
Texas-Arlington's ace Michael Gardner gave the Razorbacks fits all day before Bridges' home run. The right-hander allowed just three hits in seven innings of work. Gardner threw 104 pitches and struck out seven.
Texas-Arlington got on the scoreboard first with a RBI ground out by designated hitter Justin Stevens. The Razorbacks appeared to be out of the inning two batters earlier on a double-play ball to second base, but shortstop Scott Hode dropped the throw to second to load the bases.
Gilbert pitched his way out of another jam in the fourth inning after getting the first two outs of the inning. An error, single and walk loaded the bases for the Mavericks before left-fielder Clint Arnold got Gilbert out of the inning with a running-over-the-shoulder catch to retire the side.
