Razorback Football Players Continue to Rack up

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Four Razorback first-year players picked up gridiron honors on Monday as the Football Writers Association of America named its freshman All-American squad and The Sporting News released its SEC All-Freshman team.

Freshman offensive tackle Shawn Andrews and first-year cornerback Lawrence Richardson were selected to the FWAA Freshman All-America team. As a partial qualifier, Richardson is technically a sophomore by NCAA standards but played his first collegiate campaign in 2001. The Galveston, Texas, native could earn a fourth year of eligibility by graduating in four years. Richardson started all 12 games at the field cornerback position and led the SEC with 20 pass deflections. Richardson also made 51 tackles and returned 18 kickoffs for 416 yards a touchdown.

Andrews earned his second freshman All-America recognition after being honored by The Sporting News last month. Inserted into the starting lineup in the third game of the season, Andrews helped Arkansas average more than 370 yards in total offense in the Hogs' final nine regular season contests. Andrews was also a consensus SEC All-Freshman team selection.

In addition, Andrews, linebacker Jeb Huckeba and cornerback Ahmad "Batman" Carroll were named to The Sporting News' SEC All-Freshman list. Huckeba was a key reserve and special teams player earning 24 tackles on the campaign. The Searcy, Ark., product was also recognized on the SEC Coaches' All-Freshman squad.

Carroll earned third-team freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News as well as earning plaudits from league coaches and the Knoxville News-Sentinel on their SEC All-Freshman squads. Carroll tallied 42 tackles and 13 pass deflections in his inaugural season with the Hogs.

Arkansas finished the 2001 season with a 7-5 record including a berth in the 2002 SBC Cotton Bowl.
