Razorbacks Capture Missouri Southern Title

JOPLIN, Mo. - The Razorbacks claimed their second team victory of the 2003 season when they had five runners finish in the top 10 to tally 32 points at the Missouri Southern Invitational in Joplin, Mo. Junior All-American Jason Sandfort was UA's high finisher as he earned runner-up honors on the 8K course with a career-best time of 24:20.10.
"They did very good," Arkansas head coach John McDonnell said. "The freshmen looked as good as I thought they would. Sandfort really took on the leadership position in the absence of Alistair. All in all it looked promising, but I'm pleased with the effort. In a year these guys are really going to be something to reckon with. They're not afraid to get out there and run."
The newcomers truly shined for Arkansas as four of them came in the top 15. True freshman Mike Poe posted a fifth-place finish (24:40.90), while sophomore Luis Bordes was close behind in seventh with a career-best time of 24:44.50.
Freshman Josh Harper was eighth (24:49.80) and junior transfer Eric Gross rounded out the top 10 as he ran a time of 24:55.50. Sophomore Matt Gunn registered a time of 25:06.60 to come in 12th and freshman Adam Perkins turned in a time of 25:13.40 for a 14th place showing. Senior Chris Mulvaney crossed the line in 18th (25:25.30) and sophomore Michael Taylor was 22nd (25:29.90).
Arkansas will travel next to Stillwater, Okla., on October 4 for the Oklahoma State Jamboree with the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., following on October 18.
