FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Four days after being named to the Lombardi Award watch list for the 2003 season, Arkansas junior offensive tackle Shawn Andrews has now been added to the watch list for the Outland Trophy.
The Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee, which is comprised of nearly 300 members, including all Division I head coaches, former winners, sportswriters and broadcasters, announced its candidates on Friday. The Football Writers Association of America announced the Outland Trophy Watch List for college football's top interior lineman on Tuesday.
The winner of the 2003 Outland Trophy will be announced Dec. 11 on the ESPN College Football Awards Show from Orlando, Fla. Three finalists will be selected by the FWAA All-America Committee in late November and will appear on the show. The winner also will receive his trophy during a banquet on Jan. 8 in Omaha, Neb.
The Outland Trophy annually goes to the nation's top interior lineman - tackles, centers, guards on offense or defense are eligible - in college football. The FWAA All-America Committee selects the winner with input from the membership.
"I'm very excited that Shawn is being mentioned among the top players in the nation," UA head coach Houston Nutt said. "I think being on this list will give him added incentive to continue to work hard this offseason so he is ready to go in the fall. He is a great talent and I'm looking forward to what could be a very special year for him."
A consensus first-team All-American last season, when he was also named to the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy watch lists, Andrews is one of 36 players on the Outland Trophy list and one of 41 on the Lombardi Award list.
The Camden, Ark., native, who has also been named a preseason All-American by Playboy, earned the Jacobs Award last year, which annually goes to the best blocker in the SEC. Andrews, 6-5, 371 pounds, helped the Razorbacks go 9-5 and win the Southeastern Conference Western Division. The Hogs led the league and ranked 12th nationally with 218.9 rushing yards per game.
The first sophomore first-team All-American in UA history, Andrews earned first-team honors from the Football Writers Association of America, American Football Coaches Association, The Sporting News, CNNSI.com, ESPN.com and CollegeFootballNews.com.
A consensus All-SEC selection, he started 13 games at right tackle, recorded 68 knockdown blocks for the season and graded 85 percent or higher in eight games. He anchored a line that cleared the way for Fred Talley to rush for 1,119 yards, the sixth-best total in school history and the most for a Razorback since 1995.
