Football Practice Report: Aug. 11

FAYETTEVILLE – On Monday morning, the Arkansas football team wrapped up its first of two practices it will have today. Monday’s two-a-days will be the first of three the team will hold this week.

The offense spent time on its goal-line package with an emphasis on ball security and making sure it comes away with points in goal-to-go situations.

Venue: Outdoor practice fields

Format: Full pads

Highlights: In the first team session of the morning, senior safety Alan Turner made a great break on sophomore wide receiver Drew Morgan’s out route, leaving an extremely tight window for quarterback Brandon Allen to complete the pass, which he ultimately did … Despite giving up nearly six inches, senior cornerback Carroll Washington nicely defended and broke up a fade to the corner of the end zone intended for freshman wide receiver Kendrick Edwards … Sophomore wide receiver Cody Hollister made a terrific tip-toe grab on the sideline for a touchdown during goal-line work … Sophomore running back Alex Collins returned to practice today after sitting out Saturday’s scrimmage … During 11-on-11, sophomore tight end Jeremy Sprinkle got loose on an out and up, beating the defense and making a catch 30 yards downfield … Sophomore defensive end JaMichael Winston forced several quarterback hurries during 11-on-11, getting around the right side of the line … In four attempts at the two-minute offense, the defense kept the offense out of the end zone on three occasions.

Quote of the Day: “They said good job. They’re just happy not to write that check each semester.” - AJ Derby (@AJ_Derby) on his parents’ reaction to him being placed on scholarship

Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney on what they’re working on this week: “We have to make sure we have all the situations in: third medium, third long, third short, goal line, red zone. Every one of them so everybody knows and you install your packages there. We’re getting close, and then we go back and do it again and fine tune the details.”

Wide receivers coach Michael Smith on Kendrick Edwards (@Seis_GoDeep): “You’ve got a kid that’s 6-6, real smooth and has the ability to catch the ball naturally. He has a good demeanor about him and has picked up what we’ve put on his plate pretty well and he just brings a different dimension that we haven’t had since Coach Bielema and myself have been here.”

John Henson (@Hen_Daddy) on receiving a scholarship his final year at Arkansas: “It’s cool. I’ve been working out here every summer with no break, just like the rest of the guys. Coach Bielema announced me and AJ Derby were put on scholarship yesterday and it was just a really cool thing.”

Brandon Allen (@BrandonAllen_10) on continuing the momentum from a successful scrimmage: “Every time you perform well you want to build off that. You want to do everything you can to stay hot and keep it rolling. I thought we did a pretty good job coming out today and staying focused and I think we’re all ready to work today.”
