FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Inching ever closer to the start of the 2014 season, the University of Arkansas’ football team completed practice No. 19 of fall camp on Tuesday afternoon.
The defense had a solid day, spending considerable time working on creating turnovers, and then held steady in the two-minute drill by keeping the offense out of the end zone.
Venue: Outdoor practice fields
Format: Full pads
Highlights: Redshirt freshman running back Denzell Evans found the openings in the offensive line and slipped through for a couple of runs … Evans also showed his blocking ability, picking up some blitzes and earning kudos from offensive line coach Sam Pittman … Freshman JoJo Robinson found an opening and made a tough catch across the middle … Sophomore Korliss Marshall broke through the offensive line and then found the edge in breaking off a long run … Sophomore cornerback Jared Collins made a diving attempt to break up a pass in the end zone … Junior safety Rohan Gaines went unblocked in the red zone and made a hit on Korliss Marshall, riling up his defensive teammates on the sideline.
Quote of the Day: “I thought it was a great effort out there. I thought it was a great simulation with what it will be like weather wise and our guys showed mental and physical toughness. We did a lot of situational work to keep our minds sharp and now we’ll jump on our Auburn stuff. All good stuff out there.” - Defensive coordinator Robb Smith (@CoachSmithUA) on today’s practice
Linebacker coach Randy Shannon (@RLS2294) on Josh Williams (Josh954Williams) stepping up this fall camp: “Especially in the scrimmage this weekend, Josh was unbelievable. He was fitting the run game, his passing game was unbelievable. He keeps progressing, you give someone the chance to start, play and have an opportunity and he’s captured it and is doing a lot of good things. I’m happy to see that, because like anything, the more depth you have, the more successful you’ll be.”
Safety Alan Turner (@Dread_Head27) on the defense during last Saturday’s scrimmage: “I feel like the defense played pretty good, but we’re always hard on ourselves. We’ve still got a lot of things to do to get better, but we’re going to take it one day at a time and continue to take strides forward.”
Linebacker Braylon Mitchell (BMitch_34) on improving this fall camp: “I know what the coaches expect from me and I can be a leader on the field. The most important thing is I know what’s going on. I can read formations now, and I think I’m a way better linebacker now than I was last year.”
Defensive tackle Taiwan Johnson (TJ_WPS94) on new Arkansas defensive coordinator Robb Smith: “I really like coach Robb Smith. He’s a great coach and he’s very good with making sure the details are pounded in us every day. That’s good because it’s going to make the difference.”
