ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team met with success on the opening day of its fall season Friday, collecting four singles victories and three doubles wins, at the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Georgia.
Senior Jovan Parlic, junior transfer William Albanese and freshmen Branch Terrell and David Herrerias claimed singles wins.
Parlic netted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rob Mitchell of Lipscomb College in the round of 64. Next, Albanese battled through three sets to defeat Brent Lee of Clemson 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Terrell beat Umberto Setter (ETSU) 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3 and Herrerias bettered Blake Daniel of the Navy 6-4, 6-1. These wins were career firsts for both Terrell and Herrerias who are in their inaugural seasons with the Razorbacks.
Junior Santiago Munoz fought through three sets, but ultimately fell to Cristian Gonzalez Mendez (FSU) 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
In the doubles portion of the first day, the Razorbacks collected three victories. After a first round bye, the duo Terrell and Munoz beat J.B. Gough and David Hager of Davidson 8-6. Albanese and Herrerias teamed up to defeat Luca Cerin and Marek Pesicka (Armstrong) 8-7 (1) in the round of 32. The pair then netted an 8-6 win over Alberto Esteban and Eduardo Mena of Tennessee Tech to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Razorbacks resume play in Georgia on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. when Albanese and Herrerias face Michael Chen and Steven Patrick from Winthrop and Munoz and Terrell go up against Parker Evertsen and Jose Gracia (FSU).
