FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas’ women’s tennis team opened up the fall portion of its schedule on Friday, completing the first day of tournament action at the Country Club of Little Rock Collegiate Invitational in Little Rock, Ark. The tournament will run through Sunday.
“It was some stiff competition for us today and we acquitted ourselves quite well overall,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “Obviously the highlight was Sasha winning big and we also had a crisp doubles result from Nicole and Flavia. The fall is all about learning as much as you can and moving ahead. Tomorrow will be another opportunity to do that.”
With doubles play beginning the day, juniors Flavia Araujo and Nicole Breaux defeated Anki Wind and Kathryn Hughes of Memphis, 8-3. Junior Yang Pang and sophomore Oleksandra Shkorupeieva, ranked No. 59 in the ITA preseason poll, had a first-round bye.
In singles, Shkorupeieva started off her sophomore season strong as she defeated Kansas’ Madison Harrison, 6-1, 6-2. The Razorbacks dropped their other three singles matches on the day, as Pang, Breaux and Araujo all fell in tightly contested matches.
Day two of the tournament resumes at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
