NORMAN, Okla. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Oklahoma Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla., on Sunday and claimed championships in two of the singles brackets. Oleksandra Shkorupeieva and Flavia Araujo both were victorious in the finals of their respective brackets.
Shannon Hudson and Makenzie Craft both finished with runner-up honors in each of their brackets as well.
All in all, there were a total of four singles brackets being contested throughout the tournament, and the Razorbacks had one player in each one of the four brackets championship matches.
“Overall, over the three days we learned a great deal about our team and I know we improved each day,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “We will look forward to taking the lessons from this long weekend and coming out stronger this week in practice.”
Competing in the “Stoops” draw, Shkorupeieva defeated Tulsa’s Saana Saarteinen in three sets to claim the title, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Shkorupeieva is off to a fast start this fall as she has posted a 6-1 singles record through two tournaments thus far.
Araujo took the title in the “Switzer” draw as she rallied from a set down to beat Wichita State’s Luca Pump, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Hudson earned runner-up in the “Boomer” draw while Craft was runner-up in the “Sooner” draw.
In singles consolation action, Nicole Breaux picked up a win over Denver’s Julia O’Loughlin, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, and Peyton Jennings earned her first singles win as a Razorback as she defeated Riley Nizzi of Kansas State, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
In doubles action, Craft and Mia Jurasic teamed to defeat Texas Tech’s Dvorak and Boscher, 8-7, while Hudson and Shkorupeieva took down Cardona and Hinton of Kansas, 8-4.
Throughout the three-day tournament, the Hogs piled up a total of 19 singles wins and five doubles wins.
The Razorbacks continue their fall schedule Sept. 25-28 as they head to Boulder, Colo., for the Colorado Invitational.
