FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – On Tuesday the Southeastern Conference announced that Arkansas women’s cross country runner Dominique Scott has been named the SEC Runner of the Week after winning the 26th Annual Chile Pepper Festival in record time last Saturday morning.
The redshirt junior shattered the 5K record at the Chile Pepper Festival en route to an individual title. Scott crossed the finish line in a remarkable 16:01.00 to surpass former Indiana All-American Sarah Pease’s previous meet record time of 16:39.42.
The 16:01.00 finish is the fastest recorded 5K time by any colligate runner this season, and helped Scott earn a No. 3 individual ranking on this week’s FloTrack.com NCAA Division I Individual Rankings, moving her up three spots from last week’s placing.
It was the third time this season that the Capetown, South Africa native has recorded a meet record time, as she set the 5K record at both the adidas/UCI Invitational (17:12.50) and the Missouri Southern Stampede (16:32.78), picking up individual titles along the way. Scott has yet to been defeated in any of her three races this year.
This week’s SEC Runner of the Week award is marks the second time she has won the award this season and the third time in her career. Scott was previously honored with the award back on Sept. 9 after winning her season-debut race at the adidas/UCI Invitational.
The Arkansas women’s cross country team will be back in action on Oct. 17 when they travel to Madison, Wis., to partake in the prestigious Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The Razorbacks will go up against some of the top teams in the nation, as it will be the final tune-up race for Arkansas before the SEC Championships on Oct. 31 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
