STILLWATER, Okla. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team had one player advance during the first day of action at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Stillwater, Okla., on Thursday. Sophomore Oleksandra Shkorupeieva won both of her matches in the singles qualifying draw and will move on to play in Friday’s main draw.
Shkorupeieva was dominant in her two matches, losing just two games total. She cruised past Allie Schulte of UMKC in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and downed Mckenzie Thomas of SIU-Edwardsville in the second round, 6-1, 6-0. Shkorupeieva improved her overall fall record to 8-1. She will play Maria Cardona of Kansas in her first match of the main draw.
“I’m obviously very pleased with how tough Sasha was today,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “She was firing on all cylinders and getting a fourth player into the main draw tomorrow is great for us.”
Shkorupeieva will be joined in the main draw by juniors Makenzie Craft and Yang Pang and sophomore Shannon Hudson, who were selected for the main draw. Hudson is the No. 4 overall seed and will play Gabriela Porubin of Wichita State in the first round, while Pang will face Dimitra Stavriankou of UMKC and Craft will face Iowa’s Shelby Talcott.
The main draw of doubles will start on Friday as well. The tandem of Yang Pang and Shkorupeieva are seeded No. 2 overall and will play Boyd/Johnson of Drake in the first round. Other doubles duos in the draw from Arkanas include Flavia Araujo and Nicole Breaux, Craft and Nastassia Rubel, and Hudson and Mia Jurasic.
In other singles action on Thursday, Peyton Jennings, Nastassia Rubel and Flavia Araujo all split their matches.
Play resumes Friday at 9 a.m. from the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State with one round of doubles followed by two rounds of singles.
