STILLWATER, Okla. – The Arkansas women’s tennis team finished its second day of play on Friday at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Stillwater, Okla., and will have one player advancing in the singles main draw. Junior Makenzie Craft was victorious in both of her matches on the day to move into the round of 16.
In her first round match, Craft came back from a set down to outlast Iowa’s Shelby Talcott in a close three-setter, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. She took down Jessika Mozia of Minnesota in the second round, 6-4, 6-2. Craft is set to face Maria Alvarez of Oklahoma State in the round of 16 on Saturday.
One round of doubles was contested on Friday and the Razorbacks received wins from two tandems. Craft and Nastassia Rubel are moving on after defeating Oral Roberts’ Puentes and Simenova, 8-4. The team of Nicole Breaux and Flavia Araujo are into the next round as well, taking down Almauger and Henderson of Kansas, 8-3.
“It was a day that began really well with two doubles wins and almost a perfect four for four in first round singles,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “The day ended up well with some strong efforts and we are excited for Makenzie to advance in singles and doubles.”
Yang Pang and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva both split their singles matches on the day and were knocked out in the round of 32 while Shannon Hudson fell in three tight sets in her first round.
Play resumes from the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State Saturday morning with doubles and singles play.
