Sophomore | 2000
Wharton broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore. Thanks to her strong defense and a scrappy put-the-ball-in-play style, Wharton sparked a seventh-inning comeback during Senior Weekend at Lady'Back Yard. Wharton didn't start the game in favor of senior outfielder Katy Skaife, but she was called upon to pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh inning with Arkansas and Kentucky tied at one. Wharton danced and ducked her way to a walk and stole second putting all kinds of pressure on the Wildcat defense with two outs. Kentucky walked Arkansas' lead-off hitter (Brett Erickson) for the force, but senior Dana Gulick singled scoring Wharton from second for the win. She got the start in the second game of the double header and proved to be the defensive stopper the Lady'Backs needed with a pair of diving catches in the top of the first inning taking the wind out of the opponents' sail.
Freshman | 1999
Wharton saw time in 68 of Arkansas' 75 games as a freshman. The 5-5 right-hander had six hits in 47 at bats and scored 24 runs for the Lady'Backs. In addition, Wharton was 15-of-21 in stolen bases and saw time in the outfield with 13 put outs.
HIGH SCHOOL: Wharton began playing softball in the ninth grade and also enjoyed a stellar career as a soccer player. The all-star athlete was a member of two league-champion soccer teams as a freshman and sophomore and two for softball as a sophomore and junior. After earning all-league second-team honors in soccer and softball as a freshman at West Hills in Santee, Calif., she stepped up to earn first-team honors in both as a sophomore and junior. In addition to soccer and softball, Wharton was also an all-league volleyball player helping her team to three league titles and was a kicker on her high school league-champion football team. Away from athletics, Wharton was a member of the principal's honor roll, won the Alpha Plus Academic Award and was a member of student government.
PERSONAL:The daughter of Doug and Nancy Wharton, Andrea Michelle Wharton has one older brother, Jason, and her family resides in El Cajon, Calif. Born Aug. 12, 1979, Wharton is majoring in recreation.
